Fetishism in Fashion

F e T i S H
is a Portugese word which they created to describe the precious and powerful trinkets and objects they saw when they invaded Africa during the days of Slavery
☆
The relationship that has develop between fetishism and fashion is the subject of the 2013 Biennale curated by trend forecaster Li Edelkoort.
Fetishes can take many forms.
From within the main stream culture, shopping fetishes, trainer fetishes to the fringes of society, bondage and S&M.
Its a emotive, riveting subject and it might just be the motivation I need to finally visit Arnhem in the Netherlands when the events are held next month.
June 8th - July 21st

The Making of a Couture Kimono

Carine Gilson is one of the great lingerie designers
☆
When I first discovered the world of lingerie it was a quite sad old world of white bras and the majority of customers were only just discovering nude never mind neons but then in the midst of all this Carine Gilson was a vision to all us young designers. Consistently producing the most delicious handworked lace cutout lingerie pieces I defy anyone not to appreciate the beauty of her creations.
Now you can watch the process of her creation filmed over two days for Showstudio. It's a long old film not for the fashion faint hearted. I would say pop it on and then potter about and it's like Carine is creating something very special in the corner of your living room

Holland Show

A few years ago I was asked if I could make a dancer look like a sunflower for a performance by Yoko Ono and Basement Jaxx on the Jools Holland Show
☆
Although I have not always liked or maybe appreciated Yoko Onos work I have a huge respect and fascination for her individuality.
I never got to meet her backstage on the Jools Holland Show I remember I had to send a young student to dress the sunflower dancer although I struggle to think now what could have been more important than the chance to meet Yoko...?
So, to Yokos latest adventure a fashion/art collaboration with Opening Ceremony.
The actual mens clothes/underwear are ..challenging, as you would expect but this little animation is the coolest fun thing I have seen in a long while.

& Other Stories: Underwear

After all the social media hype and fashion whisperings at last, today the stores open and the website is live
☆
& Other Stories, the much awaited new concept by H&M opens today on Regent Street in London.
There is a young designer look to the lingerie which definately gives it an edgier fashion look. Plenty of soft triangle bras by The Lake and Stars and Abigail Lorrick mixed together with inhouse styles such as multistrap and longline bras, big briefs and soft body and vest styles. Website lots great, clean modern easy to shop. The concept reminds me of the Urban Outfitters lingerie model which I have always loved, linking up and supporting young or small niche designer brands by giving them a global platform.
Off to the store later will let you know
Ciao for now

Let's make it Simple: Ten Undies

How refreshing in this world of information and sensory overload to stubble across some Simplicity
☆
Ten Undies is chanelling just that. Simple colour palette, easy sizes and a focus on key styles.
More and more it seems we are looking for brands that do one thing really well and resist from trying to offer everything to everyone, it makes shopping so much easier.
In the lingerie market this is particularly important as no other product development process (perhaps shoes) takes as long and is so complex, so any simplification is welcomed. This is especially important if you have just started up as it takes time for customers to trust you with their intimates.
Brands such as SPANX, Fantasie, Freya are all success stories of simplicity lets hope we see many more in the future.

Inspired to sew by her mother and with an incredible sense of detail Holly has created these miniature brassieres, authentic down to the smallest stitch.
I can't tell you how desperately I want to grab the nearest Barbie and try them on for size.
